Supporting Children with Autism: Diagnosis, ASD Information, and Strategies

Focusing on the age range of 0-5 years, this presentation will include:

  • A brief outline of the diagnostic process for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in Saskatchewan, including how to connect with diagnosing professionals and service providers.
  • Information about a variety of characteristics, strengths, and difficulties that children with autism may have.
  • An overview of basic strategies that have been proven to support children with autism in a number of different environments.

Presenter

Almasa Nordstrom and Lauren Brandt
About:

Almasa Nordstrom is an Autism Consultant at Autism Services of Saskatoon and has been with the organization for over 5 years. She has a Masters of Education in Special Educational Psychology from the University of Saskatchewan and recently completed her coursework for her Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) certification at the Florida Institute of Technologies. Almasa supports clients with autism and their families by sharing resources, advocating, providing behavior consultation, and parent training. She also oversees the behavior therapists and the skill acquisition therapy programming for clients ages 0-5. She is passionate about teaching parents, educators, and outside organizations the benefits of applied behavior analysis as an intervention for those with ASD and how it can improve their quality of life. In her spare time, Almasa enjoys spending time with family, reading and baking.

Lauren Brandt is the Director of the Autism Intervention Program (AIP) and has been with Autism Services of Saskatoon for over 10 years. She has a Masters of Education degree (Educational Psychology and Special Education) from the University of Saskatchewan. She began working for Autism Services in 2013 and has enjoyed working in a variety of positions including: Behavior Therapist, Consultant (remote and urban), Senior Consultant, and currently the Director of AIP. Lauren appreciates working with and leading the phenomenal professionals in AIP. She enjoys how the uniqueness of each autistic individual is celebrated and how AIP supports clients and their families in working toward goals that are meaningful to them in their daily lives. In her spare time, Lauren enjoys reading, puzzling, and spending time with family.
