Syphilis in Saskatchewan

This webinar will outline the current trends of syphilis and congenital syphilis in Saskatchewan. Dr. Spence will discuss reasons for the rise of syphilis in Saskatchewan and explore innovative public health approaches to prevent syphilis. This webinar will also highlight strengths and opportunities in Saskatchewan regarding syphilis.

    Dr. Cara Spence
    About:

    Dr. Cara Spence is a member of the Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases, at the University of Saskatchewan. For over two decades, she has worked with vulnerable populations, specializing in the social determinants of health. She completed her Ph.D. in global health, conducted research work in East Africa with adolescent girls at risk or living with HIV, and has worked with Indigenous communities throughout Saskatchewan since 2001. Cara has devoted her efforts to address the HIV epidemic in Saskatchewan since 2012 and continues to advocate for equitable access to care in the province. Dr. Spence is a feminist and decolonial scholar, grounded in Indigenous methodologies and community-based research approaches. Cara works with the Wellness Wheel medical clinical team, providing care and support to on-reserve Indigenous communities, as well as clinical teams in Saskatoon who provide prevention and treatment support for infectious diseases. Cara supports the peer support network that operates throughout the province of Saskatchewan, offering culturally grounded and responsive multi-disciplinary healthcare for those at risk or living with HIV and other infectious diseases.
