The State of Nutrition During Pregnancy: Where Are We?

February 15, 2024 @ 10:00 am. - 11:30 am.

This webinar will address the importance of nutrition during pregnancy, including the concept of Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) and recommendations for energy, protein, fiber, and specific nutrients (e.g., folic acid, vitamin D, iron). Tools to maximize intake will also be discussed.

The importance of focusing on overall dietary quality during pregnancy will be emphasized with supporting studies. Finally, barriers to healthy eating in vulnerable populations will be explored by addressing the concept of perinatal social nutrition and the development of a new intervention tool for this population.

Presenter

Anne-Sophie Morisset
About:

Anne-Sophie Morisset, a registered dietician, received her training at the laboratory of Dr. André Tchernof at Laval University, where she earned her Ph.D. in 2012. The objective of her work was to investigate the associations between dietary factors, gestational diabetes mellitus, and gestational weight gain. After completing her Ph.D., she joined the laboratory of Dr. William D. Fraser at the Research Center of CHU Sainte-Justine. From 2013 to 2015, she focused her research efforts on large provincial and Canadian birth cohorts (MIREC and 3D studies), where she studied the intake of vitamin D, iron, and calcium in pregnant women. She was appointed as a professor at the School of Nutrition in the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences at Laval University in July 2015, where she obtained her aggregation in 2020. She is now a researcher at the Research Center of CHU de Québec – Laval University and at the Nutrition, Health, and Society Center (NUTRISS) of the Institute on Nutrition and Functional Foods (INAF) at Laval University.

Dr. Morisset’s research focuses on perinatal nutrition. More recently, her research program has been funded by the Fonds de recherche du Québec-Santé and aims to optimize nutrition during pregnancy to positively influence glucose homeostasis and reduce short- and long-term risks of obesity and diabetes for mothers. Specifically, she is currently conducting an intervention study based on the 2019 GAC guidelines to evaluate the effects of a nutrition intervention initiated early in pregnancy on glucose homeostasis in 120 pregnant individuals at risk of gestational diabetes, compared to standard care. She is also involved in a project aimed at developing evidence-based educational tools to help pregnant individuals manage their gestational diabetes mellitus immediately after diagnosis.

She collaborates closely with clinical dieticians in the province of Quebec who work in the field of perinatal nutrition to ensure that her research addresses clinical issues. She is a member of the scientific committee of the OLO Foundation and serves as the secretary of the provincial roundtable of dieticians-nutritionists working in fetal-maternal medicine. She has contributed to the publication of over 60 scientific articles, and her work has been funded by organizations including Fonds de recherche du Québec -Santé, CIHR, Diabetes Quebec, the CHU de Quebec Foundation, the CMDO network, Danone Institute, and CFI.
