Using Trauma-Informed Care Principles in Supporting Intergenerational Trauma in First Nation Communities

Intergenerational trauma continues to manifest and to be evident in our First Nation communities, and in Indigenous peoples and families despite not directly experiencing the trauma. This trauma, passed down, and in some cases, layered with the individual’s own trauma experiences, has a compounding effect on the individual/families and their wellbeing. With timely and appropriate intervention, the transmission can be slowed/stopped. This is particularly important in terms of support and intervention for those working with Indigenous peoples.

In this training, participants will understand the fundamentals of trauma-informed care and the 4 R’s – Respect, Relevance, Reciprocity, and Responsibility. Training will include 13 Calls to Action that can be implemented into their agency and into their personal practice to better respond to the cultural needs of Indigenous peoples living with trauma.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Develop an understanding of trauma-informed care specific to Indigenous People.
  • Explain principles of trauma-informed care and recognize how to apply the principles within the service setting.
  • Recognize the opportunities/challenges of implementing a trauma-informed care approach in the organization.
  • Identify ways to implement trauma-informed care approach both across the organization and in specific roles.

My Curious Brain Workshop

The My Curious Brain book sparks children’s curiosity about how the brain works and provides children and adults with information and activities to support mental health and stress awareness.

My Curious Brain resources make learning about stress and its impacts interesting and fun. This workshop will offer an introduction to the My Curious Brain book, virtual Resource Room, and User Guide, along with strategies and tips on how to use these tools to support children and the adults in their lives.

However, what can help children survive and even thrive through hardships is healthy connections with adults. This 90-minute webinar will provide both a theoretical background and practical applications of trauma-informed care for young children (under the age of 5).

Mental Health During the Perinatal Period: Helpful Strategies for Community Members and Practitioners

Maintaining mental health is important to the well-being of pregnant and postpartum individuals, as well as to their children and families. The perinatal period (conception to one year post-birth) represents a critical time for providing intervention. Unfortunately, existing gaps in mental health services have been exacerbated during the pandemic and there is an urgent need to ensure that families have access to timely, effective, and accessible mental health care.

This webinar highlights the importance of mental health care before, during, and after pregnancy, as well as the impacts of poor mental health on pregnant people, the fetus, and infants. It also explores strategies to help support communities and practitioners in identifying pregnant or postpartum patients who may be experiencing mental health issues, assess the severity of their symptoms and determine appropriate care or treatment, including follow-up.

Paving New Trails for Hope

The youth of today are training to be the adults of tomorrow. Youth are watching us closely, and
they continuously copy what they see. If we as adults are unable to embrace vulnerability, reach
out for help, or manage our emotions in a healthy way, why would they? Learn how to step into vulnerability, embrace your story, and connect to yourself and others in a more authentic way. By finding your own voice, you will be able to inspire others to find theirs. This keynote will provide a better understanding of topics relating to: substance use, trauma, suicide, and ultimately wellness. Having experienced these challenges first-hand, Allan shares his captivating story of resilience and hope.
In order for us to help others, we must first help ourselves. Hope is real. Healing is possible.

Takeaways from Paving New Trails for Hope

  • Identify barriers that prevent individuals from seeking help
  • Understand how genders react differently to mental health issues
  • Examine the relationship between trauma and substance use
  • Review strategies to heal through a holistic app
  • Discover how to create an attitude of resilience

The Effect of Maternal Depression and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) on Mother-Infant Sleep

This webinar examines the relationship between mothers’ mental health and mother-infant sleep. If mothers have depression or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) during pregnancy, it affects their babies’ sleep, but other factors such as breastfeeding and infant sleep location can also have an impact. The key message of this session is that maternal mental health does impact both mothers’ and babies’ sleep and can make breastfeeding more difficult. However, mothers can overcome these effects and breastfeeding is one important way to modify the physiological effects of depression and trauma.
