Family Diversities and Family Demographics Across Canada

In this session, Emily Kenny, Knowledge Broker at the Vanier Institute of the Family, will offer a panoramic overview of the key aspects that demand our attention when contemplating the diverse nature of families today.

Drawing from the latest Census data releases, alongside insights from various StatCan surveys and a selection of smaller yet impactful research projects, we will explore recent demographic statistics about families in Canada. Together, we will gain a better understanding of evolving social, economic, historical, and cultural dynamics that shape the contemporary family landscape.

Whether you’re an educator, a researcher, a policymaker, or simply someone intrigued by the multifaceted tapestry of families in Canada, this webinar will provide you with valuable insights that foster a deeper appreciation for the diversity among families in Canada. Join us to broaden your perspective and engage in meaningful discussions about the mosaic of family life in Canada.

The Impact of Violence Against Women in the Perinatal Period

Events from childhood can influence a woman’s current mothering experience, as well as her health and well-being. Fortunately, these experiences do not have to be the blueprint for the rest of her life. This session provides an overview of recent research on the effects of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and intimate partner violence (IPV). Also covered are the impact of violence on breastfeeding and how it can affect a woman’s body, mind, and spirit. You will learn how providers can help and support women experiencing violence.

The Effect of Maternal Depression and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) on Mother-Infant Sleep

This webinar examines the relationship between mothers’ mental health and mother-infant sleep. If mothers have depression or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) during pregnancy, it affects their babies’ sleep, but other factors such as breastfeeding and infant sleep location can also have an impact. The key message of this session is that maternal mental health does impact both mothers’ and babies’ sleep and can make breastfeeding more difficult. However, mothers can overcome these effects and breastfeeding is one important way to modify the physiological effects of depression and trauma.

Anxiety: Worried Kids, Worrying about Worrying

All children worry. Anxiety can be helpful and necessary. But for some children, it is a heavy weight to bear that changes how they interact with others and the world. It affects how they think, behave, and feel. It can lead to anger and aggression. It can even increase the risk suicide and self-harm.

This session will cover how we can recognize when anxiety is interfering, and how we can support children struggling with it.

Dr. Sarda was the closing Keynote at Prevention Matters 2019. His session was very highly rated. Here are some quotes from the conference evaluation:

I really appreciated his practical approach to providing information – this session was fantastic!

EXCELLENT! Everyone needs to know this stuff!

Very easy to listen to and engaging, I took a lot of information away from this session.

This was excellent. Relevant and relatable.

There were technical difficulties with the recording of the original webinar. In this re-recording of his webinar Dr. Sarda provides a thorough understanding of anxiety in children and ways to help those who struggle with it. At the end of the presentation Dr. Sarda responds to a few questions about child anxiety during the pandemic.
