The Invisibility of Brain Development: Implications for How We Interact with and Support Young Children

This session will explore important implications of early brain development for how we interact with and support young children. Specifically, neural development and neural pruning: what are they, why are they important, and how to support this area of development for children 0 to 2 years of age using everyday items and activities. This session will also cover development of the five senses (hearing, seeing, smell, taste, touch) during pregnancy and how they relate to early brain development.

  • Observing and practicing brief interventions to increase engagement, elicit behavior change and reduce counterproductive discussions.
  • Identifying referral best practices to increase the likelihood of a person engaging in additional services and support.

Healthy Prenatal Development and Its Impact on the Early Years

It will cover what happens during fetal development and why it’s important to understand it, how to support a healthy pregnancy for better health outcomes for the mother and the baby, and how a healthy development in the early years can be a foundation in the subsequent years.

The Effect of Maternal Depression and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) on Mother-Infant Sleep

This webinar examines the relationship between mothers’ mental health and mother-infant sleep. If mothers have depression or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) during pregnancy, it affects their babies’ sleep, but other factors such as breastfeeding and infant sleep location can also have an impact. The key message of this session is that maternal mental health does impact both mothers’ and babies’ sleep and can make breastfeeding more difficult. However, mothers can overcome these effects and breastfeeding is one important way to modify the physiological effects of depression and trauma.
