Canadian Alcohol Policy Evaluation (CAPE): Results for Saskatchewan

Alcohol use is a cause of substantial health, social and financial harms. This includes alcohol dependence, FASD, cancers, liver cirrhosis, interpersonal violence, and injury or death resulting from impaired drivers. The Canadian Alcohol Policy Evaluation (CAPE) is a research project that assesses how well governments in Canada are implementing policies proven to reduce harm from alcohol use. This session will look at alcohol policies such as minimum legal age, health and safety messaging, and marketing and advertising restrictions, and provide recommendations for strengthening Saskatchewan’s policy response to alcohol harms. There will be time for Q&A.

Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment: Training in the SBIRT Model

Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) is an evidence-based practice used to identify, reduce and prevent unhealthy substance use. This two-part workshop will cover:

  • Using validated screening tools to effectively determine alcohol and drug use risk level.
  • Observing and practicing brief interventions to increase engagement, elicit behavior change and reduce counterproductive discussions.
  • Identifying referral best practices to increase the likelihood of a person engaging in additional services and support.

Stigma Ends With Me

This webinar aims to uncover biases and change how we view people who use substances, and will help show how stigma affects people. It will teach attendees how to connect in a non-stigmatizing way by learning how to use language that focuses on the person, not their use of substances. Attendees will also gain the knowledge needed to help improve the health outcomes of people who use/d substances.

Developing an Innu FASD Prevention Strategy

In this presentation, Annie and Melody will share the background context, the scope of work, and the outcomes from a community-wide FASD prevention project in Labrador. Annie will share the history and impetus behind developing a strengths- and asset-based approach to articulating an FASD prevention strategy in Sheshatshiu Innu First Nations and Mushuau Innu First Nations. Melody will describe how a funded project (Health Services Integration Fund) was conducted to map existing prevention work already happening within both communities. Key findings and recommendations will be shared. Together, Annie and Melody will explain how the project has informed several project deliverables and community plans.

FASD throughout the lifespan

Having not received an FASD diagnosis until his late forties, RJ Formanek was startled to find how many of the strategies he had used throughout life were a result of FASD. In this webinar, RJ Formanek will share his experiences on how FASD affects the people who have it and how it impacts the world around them. You will learn about brain functions and how they may look in day-to-day life for an individual with FASD, along with some of the challenges and strategies that are helpful educational tools for families and caregivers to understand, see, and think differently about FASD.

Brain and Behaviour Changes with Low PAE

This presentation will discuss how brain and behaviour in children with low levels of prenatal alcohol exposure are altered compared to well-matched, unexposed controls. Magnetic resonance imaging measurements of human brain were used in their research, in conjunction with parent-reports of behaviour. We found that children with low levels of prenatal alcohol exposure (average = 1 drink/week) had weaker brain connectivity and more problematic behaviour compared with unexposed controls. This study shows effects of even low levels of alcohol during pregnancy and highlights the importance of public health messaging during pregnancy.

FASD and Dental Health in Young Children

Tooth decay remains the most common chronic disease of childhood and the most common cause of day surgeries in Canada. Children with untreated tooth decay can suffer from malnutrition, poor growth, and a reduced oral health related quality of life. Recent evidence suggests that children with FASD may be at a higher risk for dental caries and have greater overall treatment needs. We know that oral health is an integral component of our overall health and well-being, however, oral health care has long been separated from the general health care system and access to dental care remains a challenge.

In this webinar, we will review the oral health – systemic health connection, the oral health status and barriers to care for children with FASD, and innovations in public health dentistry that focus on an interdisciplinary approach to prevention of dental disease.
