Canadian Alcohol Policy Evaluation (CAPE): Results for Saskatchewan

Alcohol use is a cause of substantial health, social and financial harms. This includes alcohol dependence, FASD, cancers, liver cirrhosis, interpersonal violence, and injury or death resulting from impaired drivers. The Canadian Alcohol Policy Evaluation (CAPE) is a research project that assesses how well governments in Canada are implementing policies proven to reduce harm from alcohol use. This session will look at alcohol policies such as minimum legal age, health and safety messaging, and marketing and advertising restrictions, and provide recommendations for strengthening Saskatchewan’s policy response to alcohol harms. There will be time for Q&A.

Mental Health During the Perinatal Period: Helpful Strategies for Community Members and Practitioners

Maintaining mental health is important to the well-being of pregnant and postpartum individuals, as well as to their children and families. The perinatal period (conception to one year post-birth) represents a critical time for providing intervention. Unfortunately, existing gaps in mental health services have been exacerbated during the pandemic and there is an urgent need to ensure that families have access to timely, effective, and accessible mental health care.

This webinar highlights the importance of mental health care before, during, and after pregnancy, as well as the impacts of poor mental health on pregnant people, the fetus, and infants. It also explores strategies to help support communities and practitioners in identifying pregnant or postpartum patients who may be experiencing mental health issues, assess the severity of their symptoms and determine appropriate care or treatment, including follow-up.

Paving New Trails for Hope

The youth of today are training to be the adults of tomorrow. Youth are watching us closely, and
they continuously copy what they see. If we as adults are unable to embrace vulnerability, reach
out for help, or manage our emotions in a healthy way, why would they? Learn how to step into vulnerability, embrace your story, and connect to yourself and others in a more authentic way. By finding your own voice, you will be able to inspire others to find theirs. This keynote will provide a better understanding of topics relating to: substance use, trauma, suicide, and ultimately wellness. Having experienced these challenges first-hand, Allan shares his captivating story of resilience and hope.
In order for us to help others, we must first help ourselves. Hope is real. Healing is possible.

Takeaways from Paving New Trails for Hope

  • Identify barriers that prevent individuals from seeking help
  • Understand how genders react differently to mental health issues
  • Examine the relationship between trauma and substance use
  • Review strategies to heal through a holistic app
  • Discover how to create an attitude of resilience
