Canadian Alcohol Policy Evaluation (CAPE): Results for Saskatchewan

Alcohol use is a cause of substantial health, social and financial harms. This includes alcohol dependence, FASD, cancers, liver cirrhosis, interpersonal violence, and injury or death resulting from impaired drivers. The Canadian Alcohol Policy Evaluation (CAPE) is a research project that assesses how well governments in Canada are implementing policies proven to reduce harm from alcohol use. This session will look at alcohol policies such as minimum legal age, health and safety messaging, and marketing and advertising restrictions, and provide recommendations for strengthening Saskatchewan’s policy response to alcohol harms. There will be time for Q&A.

Let’s Talk Alcohol

Alcohol is carcinogenic, teratogenic and causally associated with numerous other health related harms. Our updated evidence review, using both relative and absolute risk analysis, presents a more transparent picture of the continuum of risk associated with increasing levels of alcohol consumption. To add greater clarity to alcohol’s health impact, we used lifetime abstainers as our comparison population; identified the absolute risk level of consumption for a 1:1,000 level of risk of premature death – a risk level generally accepted for voluntary activity – as well as the 1:100 level of risk historically used to define “low risk” alcohol consumption.

The results are surprising, and necessitate a new approach to communicating the continuum of risk to consumers. This includes not only the population health data, but also helping people to individualize their personal risk in the context of their alcohol use. It is intended to inform, provoke reflection, and assist in reducing harm. Less is better, while the consumer has the right to be more fully informed.

Paving New Trails for Hope

The youth of today are training to be the adults of tomorrow. Youth are watching us closely, and
they continuously copy what they see. If we as adults are unable to embrace vulnerability, reach
out for help, or manage our emotions in a healthy way, why would they? Learn how to step into vulnerability, embrace your story, and connect to yourself and others in a more authentic way. By finding your own voice, you will be able to inspire others to find theirs. This keynote will provide a better understanding of topics relating to: substance use, trauma, suicide, and ultimately wellness. Having experienced these challenges first-hand, Allan shares his captivating story of resilience and hope.
In order for us to help others, we must first help ourselves. Hope is real. Healing is possible.

Takeaways from Paving New Trails for Hope

  • Identify barriers that prevent individuals from seeking help
  • Understand how genders react differently to mental health issues
  • Examine the relationship between trauma and substance use
  • Review strategies to heal through a holistic app
  • Discover how to create an attitude of resilience

Let’s Talk About Sex: How a New Generation Navigates Hookups, Porn, Love & Consent

Peggy Orenstein, author of the New York Times best-sellers Girls & Sex and Boys & Sex combines her research with voices of teens (as well as those between or beyond genders), to discuss the impact on high school and college students’ sexual scripts of mainstream media, social media and porn; hookup culture; changing expectations around consent (and why “consent education” is not enough); the politics of sexual pleasure; the diversity of sexual orientations; gender socialization and power dynamics; the importance of connection. With humor and compassion, she separates myth from reality, ultimately giving parents, educators and advocates the conversational tools they need to ensure safe, pleasurable, mutually satisfying sexual encounters and intimate relationships.

Anxiety: Worried Kids, Worrying about Worrying

All children worry. Anxiety can be helpful and necessary. But for some children, it is a heavy weight to bear that changes how they interact with others and the world. It affects how they think, behave, and feel. It can lead to anger and aggression. It can even increase the risk suicide and self-harm.

This session will cover how we can recognize when anxiety is interfering, and how we can support children struggling with it.

Dr. Sarda was the closing Keynote at Prevention Matters 2019. His session was very highly rated. Here are some quotes from the conference evaluation:

I really appreciated his practical approach to providing information – this session was fantastic!

EXCELLENT! Everyone needs to know this stuff!

Very easy to listen to and engaging, I took a lot of information away from this session.

This was excellent. Relevant and relatable.

There were technical difficulties with the recording of the original webinar. In this re-recording of his webinar Dr. Sarda provides a thorough understanding of anxiety in children and ways to help those who struggle with it. At the end of the presentation Dr. Sarda responds to a few questions about child anxiety during the pandemic.
