The Lockbox Project: Starting Safety Conversations in Suicide and Accidental Poisoning Prevention

March 19, 2025 @ 1:00 pm. - 2:30 pm.

In recognition of Poison Prevention Week (March 16-22, 2025), this webinar will highlight an innovative medication lockbox project along with evidence-based resources for youth mental health and childhood poisoning prevention. Suicide is an ongoing concern in Canada and around the world. Saskatchewan has adopted the Roots of Hope framework, which is a community-based model that supports populations across Canada in reducing the impact of suicide in their local context. The model builds on community expertise to implement suicide prevention strategies and life promotion interventions. The foundation for the original medication lockbox project in Meadow Lake and an expanded lockbox initiative project in North Battleford is the Means Safety pillar of the Roots of Hope framework. This webinar aims to empower communities, service providers, and caregivers by featuring one tool for raising awareness of the importance of reducing access to means of self-harm in homes and its adaptability to meet community needs. It’s not about the box, rather it is about providing resources and having a way to start a means safety conversation to prevent suicide and reducing accidental poisonings.
