Human Papillomavirus (HPV)

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by a virus. There are many different types of HPV. Some types cause genital warts, and others can increase the risk for certain types of cancer.

HPV is the most common STI in Canada – approximately 75% of sexually active Canadians will have at least one HPV infection in their lifetime. Anyone who is sexually active can get HPV, although HPV infections are most common among young people aged 15-24.
