Having experienced trauma may play a role in sexual risk behaviours, unplanned pregnancies, substance misuse and dependence, and negative impacts on pregnancy, parenting, and children. Given the prevalence and impact of trauma during the perinatal period, it is recommended that services and interventions have a trauma-informed approach. This review examines recent literature on the impacts of trauma, and a trauma-informed approach to working with families, particularly in the pre-conception, prenatal, and postnatal period.
