Childhood immunization remains one of the most effective public health interventions for preventing diseases and protecting the health of children and communities. In Saskatchewan, the level of protection for vaccine preventable diseases has fallen below optimal levels.
To better understand what is working well and what can be improved in immunization services, our research team engaged families of children 0-6 years of age and healthcare workers in two regions of Saskatchewan to gain their perspectives. Designed for healthcare providers, public health professionals, community workers, and persons interested in immunization information, this session will aim to address the following:
- Examine the current state of childhood immunization coverage in Saskatchewan and Canada.
- Provide an overview of current vaccines and immunization practices in Saskatchewan.
- Identify common facilitators and barriers to childhood immunization in Saskatchewan and Canada.
- Provide an overview of family and healthcare worker driven immunization service improvement strategies.
- Discuss the healthcare provider role in childhood immunizations.
