Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment: Training in the SBIRT Model – part 1

Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) is an evidence-based practice used to identify, reduce and prevent unhealthy substance use. This two-part workshop will cover:Using validated screening tools to effectively determine alcohol and drug use risk levels;observing and practicing brief interventions to increase engagement, elicit behavior change and reduce counterproductive discussions;and identifying referral best practices to increase the likelihood of a person engaging in additional services and support.

About:

Pam Pietruszewski is a Senior Advisor with the National Council for Mental Wellbeing with specialties in Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT). She has more than 20 years’ experience designing and implementing programs to integrate behavioral health and primary care services. She is listed in the National Registry of SBIRT Trainers from the Addiction Technology Transfer Center (ATTC) Network established by SAMHSA and served as faculty on the development of two National Council SBIRT guides: Improving Adolescent Health: Facilitating Change for Excellence in SBIRT and Implementing Care for Alcohol and Other Drug Use in Medical Settings: An Extension of SBIRT.
