Assessment and Support of Preschoolers with Prenatal Alcohol Exposure

Learning Objectives:

  1. Outline the basic definition of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) and recognize how prenatal alcohol exposure may impact the developing brain,
  2. Review the landscape of FASD assessment and diagnosis in Saskatchewan,
  3. Illustrate progress towards a functional and forward-thinking model for FASD assessment and diagnosis,
  4. Show why early diagnostic assessment and services are important
  5. Recognize challenges and strengths that an individual with FASD may experience, and briefly explore the roles that caregivers and other supporting individuals can have

Derek Friesen
About:

Derek is an FASD Assessment Coordinator based in Saskatoon. With a background in behavioral science, educational psychology, and knowledge translation, he analyze’s complex problems and bridges the gap between different stakeholders. Derek’s goal is to make FASD assessment more accessible and responsive to the needs of Saskatchewan families.

Dr. Ghita Wiebe
About:

is a Developmental Pediatrician based mainly in Saskatoon at the Alvin Buckwold Child Development Program. She is the Division Head for Developmental Pediatrics and the Physician Lead for the SHA Provincial Autism Strategy. She is an Assistant Professor with the University of Saskatchewan. Her clinical and academic interests are in Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), and the developmental and mental health needs of children and youth in foster care.
